Chapter Nine

Soon carrying my fourth and hopefully final cooking effort of the night – I’m definitely getting more efficient at this – I cast a wary glance at the front door as I pass by the hall, half expecting yet another visitor to show up and claim imminent domain over my omelet.

Cautiously approaching the living room, I’m almost surprised to find everyone looking halfway normal. The three teens are lined up on the big sofa watching a late-night talk show: Angela’s seated at one end in a new red shirt that I think promotes Def Leppard, Jeremy is slouched at the opposite end, while Hannah’s sprawled in-between. I move to sit in the lone chair opposite the sofa, but Hannah waves me over.

“Hey, now... don’t be a stranger, stranger!” she says, sliding up tight against Jeremy and patting the vacated space between herself and Angela. Which is probably only about two-thirds as wide as it would need to be to fit my husky frame!

But as a red-blooded male who’s getting rather tired of being the only one to show any kind of mature restraint tonight, I see no real reason to turn down a harmless offer to sit between two very pretty, scantily clad girls.

Plonking myself on the sofa, Hannah giggles and squishes up tighter against Jeremy.

“Ooh, nice and cozy... just the way I like it,” she comments.

“Uh huh,” I reply absentmindedly, taking a first bite of my snack. Finally! And pretty damn good, if I do say so myself.

“Who taught you to cook, Trent?” asks Hannah.

I eat another mouthful before answering. “Um, I guess my dad first got me interested in that... but he just showed me the basics. Mostly I like to try out different stuff to see what happens. It can be a lot of fun.”

“Heh, you could teach my mom something! I swear she can make exactly seven meals, and three of them are chicken. Hey Jeremy, do you cook too?”

My friend chuckles. “Yeah – Ramin! But that’s why I know Trent, right? He can make a gourmet meal outta practically any crap lying around.”

“Mmm... I know someone with something he could make a meal out of right now.” My body tenses as Hannah’s hand slides over my thigh, her fingers lightly caressing the denim of my jeans. My own hands are busy with my snack, so I try to ignore her. “Now, me, I like to go out. You like to eat out, Jeremy?”

“Um, hell yeah. I like to eat out who— I mean whenever I can. I, uh, especially enjoy going downtown.”

With a knowing snicker, Hannah responds, “So do I. I know a real good place to get delicious peach muffins, and it’s gonna be wide open all night long!”

I drop my fork on the plate with a loud clatter. “Geez. Can you guys keep the absurdly obvious innuendo down a little? You’re giving me flashbacks to something I was reading earlier, and I’m libel to throw up.”

Angela grunts with annoyance and swats me on the arm.
